A visit of the permanent exhibition is the best choice for all those who would like to acquire a basic knowledge about mercury and mining in Idrija.
They will learn all about the geological specificities of this area and the history of the town and Idrija Mercury Mine. There is a strong emphasis on learning about the exceptional characteristics of mercury and cinnabar ore, and we present a store with mercury as well as our rich technical heritage.
The elementary and secondary school students learn about the social history of the mining Idrija and its specifics – from cuisine to the Idrija bobbin lace. A story about 500 years of mining is concluded with the mine closure at the end of the 20th century and the entry of its legacy into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
