Idrija “Kamšt”

Idrija Mercury Mine constantly followed new achievements in engineering in its 500 years of history. One of those significant achievements was the pump for pumping pit water. The 1790 Idrija “Kamšt” shows the elementary and secondary school students learn how the water-powered pump operated. The 13.6-metre-diameter drive water wheel is known as the largest wooden water wheel in Europe.

It is recommended in combination with a visit to the Idrija Municipal Museum’s technical department in the Francis’ Shaft.

Connection with the school curriculum:

History of the New Age, industrial revolution, engineering and technology (technical means), energy, ecology, UNESCO
